The Night Remembers (A Poem) by Otene Ogwuche

The night remembers the tears

Shed at the realisation that the love

Was meant to be consummated

How the heart expanded to hold the lump

Formed by an explosion of joy

At the news of impending wedlock

The night remembers the tears

This flowed freely from her eyes

That day he failed to show up

And the nights after

Abandoned to her own designs

The night remembers the tears

Shed in the dark

When the heart could bear no more

The loneliness wrought by the cold hands

That left a vacuumed existence

A trail of tears and wailings

The night remembers

The sigh

Finally acquiescing to the inevitable

When all else was left undone

The truth like a rising sun

Led the way home
